Bushen Filling Prescription

Bushen Filling Prescription (BSFP) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by Ruijin Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The prescription is formulated based on the TCM principle of tonifying the kidney and filling the essence (marrow) to address cognitive impairment. BSFP is a complex mixture typically containing herbs such as *Rehmannia glutinosa*, *Cornus officinalis*, *Panax ginseng*, and *Epimedium brevicornu*. Research indicates that BSFP works through multiple mechanisms, including the reduction of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque formation, inhibition of tau protein hyperphosphorylation, and modulation of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. It has also been shown to upregulate neurotrophic factors like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity, thereby improving synaptic plasticity and memory. Clinical studies at Ruijin Hospital have evaluated its efficacy and safety in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
