Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bushen-Qiangdu-Zhilv decoction + celecoxib is a combination therapy integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, the regimen pairs the Bushen-Qiangdu-Zhilv (BSQDZL) decoction—a herbal formula designed to tonify the kidney, strengthen the Du meridian, and alleviate joint deformity—with celecoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor. The mechanism of action involves the rapid symptomatic relief of pain and inflammation via celecoxib's inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, complemented by the decoction's broader immunomodulatory effects, which include the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-17A. This integrative approach aims to improve spinal function, reduce disease activity, and potentially slow radiographic progression more effectively than NSAID monotherapy.
