Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bushen Tongmai Fang (补肾通脉方) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula used primarily for its effects on kidney function and vascular health. It is most commonly studied and applied in the context of metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and diabetes-related vascular complications. Preclinical studies have shown that Bushen Tongmai Fang can modulate signaling pathways involved in insulin action, notably by increasing protein kinase Bα (Akt) expression in animal models of insulin resistance[1][2][6][10]. The formula is also being investigated for its potential to reduce risk factors associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in elderly diabetic patients[8]. Its mechanism of action appears to involve regulation of key molecular targets within the PI3K/Akt pathway, which plays a central role in glucose metabolism and vascular endothelial function.
