Overview
Bushen Zhiwang Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula used primarily for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly in patients diagnosed with liver and kidney deficiency syndrome according to TCM theory. The decoction is composed of multiple herbs, though the exact composition may vary; related formulas such as Bushen Quhan Zhiwang Decoction (BQZD) are reported to contain up to 18 herbs, while modified versions like Modified Zhiwang Decoction (MZWD) use 10 herbs including Curcumae longae rhizoma, Cinnamomi ramulus, and Spatholobi caulis. The mechanism of action is believed to involve immunomodulation and anti-inflammatory effects, as evidenced by reductions in clinical markers such as morning stiffness, joint tenderness, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and rheumatoid factor when used alone or in combination with methotrexate.
