Overview

Buspirone is an anxiolytic medication primarily used to treat anxiety disorders, especially generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It is a small molecule drug that acts as a partial agonist at the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, modulating serotonergic activity in the brain. Unlike benzodiazepines and barbiturates, buspirone does not cause significant sedation or dependence. It was developed in 1968 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1986. Buspirone is available only by prescription and is typically taken orally as a tablet. The brand-name version (BuSpar) is no longer manufactured, but generic forms are widely available[1][2][3][4][5][6].
