Overview

Butacaine is a white crystalline ester used as a local anesthetic. It acts primarily by blocking sodium channels in nerve membranes, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and producing local anesthesia. First marketed in 1920, it is an ester-type anesthetic chemically classified as a benzoate ester. It should not be used in individuals with known allergies to local anesthetics due to the risk of anaphylactic shock[3][5][7].
