Overview

Butalamine is a vasoactive agent and peripheral vasodilator that was primarily developed and marketed in the 1970s and 1980s for the treatment of peripheral vascular disorders. Chemically, it is a 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivative. It is indicated for the management of chronic arterial occlusive diseases, such as intermittent claudication (Fontaine stage II), where it works by stimulating blood flow and improving oxygen supply to ischemic muscular tissues without significantly altering systemic blood pressure or cardiovascular parameters. In addition to its vasodilatory effects, butalamine exhibits mild anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and local anesthetic properties. It has also been utilized in the treatment of labyrinthine disorders, including vertigo and other diseases of the inner ear, likely due to its ability to improve microcirculation in the vestibular system.
