Overview
Butamirate is a non-narcotic antitussive (cough suppressant) used primarily for the symptomatic treatment of dry (non-productive) cough. It acts centrally on the cough center in the brainstem to inhibit the cough reflex and also exhibits bronchodilatory effects by relaxing bronchial muscles. Butamirate is not chemically or pharmacologically related to opioid alkaloids and does not cause dependence or significant central nervous system depression. It may also have mild anti-inflammatory properties and reduces airway resistance, making it useful in both acute and chronic respiratory conditions associated with dry cough. The drug is available in various oral forms such as syrups, tablets, and drops[1][6][7][8].
