The butanol fraction of Ziziphus mucronata root (ZMBF) is a botanical research extract derived from the roots of *Ziziphus mucronata* Willd. (family Rhamnaceae), a plant traditionally used in Nigerian folk medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Preclinical studies, primarily conducted by academic researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Ahmadu Bello University, have investigated ZMBF for its antidiabetic potential in type 2 diabetes models. The extract functions as an inhibitor of **alpha-glucosidase**, an enzyme critical for carbohydrate digestion, with an IC50 of 1.41 μg/ml. In vivo research in diabetic rat models has shown that oral administration of ZMBF can reduce blood glucose levels, improve glucose tolerance, and increase serum insulin and liver glycogen, although it may not ameliorate all metabolic parameters associated with the disease.
