The Butantan Influenza Trivalent, Fragmented and Inactivated is a seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine produced by Instituto Butantan. It contains three strains of the influenza virus—two type A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and one type B strain—propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The viruses are harvested from the allantoic fluid, concentrated, fragmented using Triton X-100 detergent to split the viral particles, then inactivated with formaldehyde. The resulting split-virus suspension is formulated into a sterile injectable product for intramuscular or deep subcutaneous administration. The composition of viral strains is updated annually according to World Health Organization recommendations to match circulating viruses[1][2][5]. This vaccine induces active immunization by stimulating an immune response against the included viral antigens without causing disease[2][5]. It is indicated for adults and children 6 months of age or older for prevention of influenza caused by the specific strains contained within each season’s formulation[2][5]. Instituto Butantan is recognized as Latin America’s largest producer of flu vaccines; its trivalent product has been prequalified by WHO for international procurement[7].
