Overview
The Butantan pentavalent rotavirus vaccine is a live, oral, attenuated vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute in collaboration with the PATH Foundation. It utilizes a human-bovine reassortant (UK-BRV) platform, incorporating VP7 antigens from five common rotavirus serotypes: G1, G2, G3, G4, and G9. This vaccine is designed to provide broad protection against rotavirus-induced gastroenteritis, particularly targeting the strains most prevalent in Brazil. It is administered orally in a three-dose schedule and was developed through a technology transfer agreement to provide a cost-effective alternative for public health programs. The vaccine has completed Phase I clinical trials evaluating its safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity in healthy adults.
