Overview

Butaphosphan is an organic phosphorus compound (phosphonous acid derivative) used primarily in veterinary medicine as a metabolic stimulant, roborant, and tonic. It serves as a bioavailable source of phosphorus, a critical component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), thereby supporting energy metabolism and cellular function across various animal species, including cattle, horses, swine, and companion animals. The drug is indicated for the prevention and treatment of phosphorus deficiency (hypophosphatemia), metabolic disorders, negative energy balance, and liver dysfunction. While its exact molecular biological target remains unidentified, its effects are broad and metabolic, involving improvements in liver and muscle function, immune stimulation, and modulation of glucose metabolism. It was originally developed by Bayer Animal Health (now part of Elanco) and is most widely recognized as the active component in the combination product Catosal, where it is formulated with cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12).
