buthiazide

Buthiazide is a thiazide diuretic used primarily for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema. Thiazides act on the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidney to inhibit the sodium-chloride symporter (solute carrier family 12 member 3), thereby reducing sodium reabsorption and increasing excretion of sodium and water in urine. This leads to decreased extracellular fluid volume and lower blood pressure. Buthiazide shares its mechanism with other thiazides such as hydrochlorothiazide and chlorothiazide. The class was originally developed by Merck in the 1950s[5][1][3].
