Overview

Butylphthalide is a synthetic compound derived from the seeds of Apium graveolens (Chinese celery) that has been approved in China for the treatment of ischemic stroke. It exists as a racemic mixture (dl-3-n-butylphthalide) in its therapeutic form. It functions as a neuroprotective agent with multiple mechanisms of action, including improving microcirculation, protecting mitochondrial function, inhibiting oxidative stress, inhibiting neuronal apoptosis, and anti-thrombotic effects. It was approved in China in 2002 for the treatment of ischemic stroke and has shown potential therapeutic effects in various neurological and non-neurological conditions.
