Overview

Butyrospermum parkii, commonly known as the shea tree, is the source of shea butter, a fat extracted from the nuts of the tree. [1, 5, 8] It is widely used in cosmetic and skincare products as an emollient and moisturizer. [1, 2] The butter is rich in fatty acids, such as stearic and oleic acids, which help to condition the skin and support its barrier function. [4, 7] It also contains a significant unsaponifiable fraction rich in antioxidants like vitamin E and phenols, and anti-inflammatory compounds like triterpene esters. [4, 7, 9] These components contribute to its soothing, protective, and regenerative properties. [1, 9] It is generally considered safe for topical use, even on sensitive skin, and is used to manage conditions like dry skin, eczema, and dermatitis. [3, 10, 11, 12] The U.S. FDA recognizes it as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use in food. [3, 8]
