Overview

Butyrylthiocholine is a synthetic, sulfur-containing analog of butyrylcholine. Structurally, it consists of a trimethylammonium group attached to an ethyl chain linked to a butanoylthio group[8]. It is primarily used as a reagent in biochemical assays for the determination of butyrylcholinesterase activity, where it serves as an artificial substrate that is hydrolyzed by the enzyme to produce thiocholine and butyrate[1][2][3]. This property makes it valuable in research focused on cholinergic signaling pathways and in drug development targeting neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease[4]. Butyrylthiocholine itself does not have approved therapeutic indications and is not used clinically; its main application remains experimental and diagnostic.
