Overview

Buzhong Yiqi (Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed in the 13th century by Li Dong Yuan. It is designed to tonify and raise the "middle qi"—the vital energy associated with the spleen and stomach in TCM theory. The formula is primarily used to address symptoms of spleen qi deficiency and sinking yang qi such as fatigue, digestive weakness or sluggishness, prolapsed organs (e.g., uterine or rectal prolapse), chronic diarrhea or loose stools, spontaneous sweating due to weakness of qi containment function, and general lack of vitality[1][2][4][5]. The mechanism of action is based on replenishing central energy (qi), supporting digestion and nutrient absorption by strengthening spleen/stomach function ("middle burner"), raising yang energy to prevent organ prolapse or feelings of heaviness ("lifting" action), modulating immune response via adaptogenic herbs like astragalus root (huang qi), and potentially regulating gut flora[3][5]. Modern research has explored its effects on physical strength/fatigue recovery[6], anti-aging properties through telomere support[4], immune modulation after illness/childbirth[7], digestive health support for conditions like IBS/chronic indigestion[4], as well as adjunctive use in stroke prevention/recovery via neuroprotection and gut-brain axis regulation[3].
