Overview

BV100 is a novel intravenous formulation of rifabutin developed specifically to treat serious hospital infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) and the broader Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex (ABC). Unlike traditional oral rifabutin, BV100 leverages a newly discovered mechanism that enables active uptake of rifabutin into Gram-negative bacteria, allowing for effective targeting of the RNA polymerase enzyme in these pathogens at clinically relevant doses. This approach addresses a critical unmet need in treating ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP), hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP), and bloodstream infections (BSI) due to CRAB, which are associated with high mortality rates and limited treatment options. The drug has demonstrated favorable safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetic profiles in Phase 1 studies and strong initial efficacy signals in Phase 2 trials for VABP. BV100 has received Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) designation from the US FDA for VABP, HABP, and BSI[1][2][3][6][10].
