BVA-201 is a repositioned small molecule drug candidate developed by Biovista for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Identified as a tetracyclic pyrazinoindole compound, BVA-201 was discovered through Biovista's drug repositioning platform and is an existing approved drug being repurposed for its neuroprotective properties. Unlike conventional MS therapies that primarily target inflammatory pathways, BVA-201 modulates oxidative stress pathways to protect neural axons and myelin from degeneration. In preclinical studies using the MOG-induced Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model, the drug demonstrated efficacy in reducing disease severity comparable to dexamethasone without associated toxicity. BVA-201 is blood-brain barrier permeable and possesses an established safety profile from its prior clinical use in other chronic indications. It is currently positioned as ready for human Proof of Concept (PoC) studies.
