Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BVA-203 is a small molecule drug candidate developed by Biovista for the treatment of Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). As a repositioned drug, it is an existing pharmaceutical agent being developed for a new indication, which provides it with an established safety profile and favorable pharmacokinetics. The drug's mechanism of action involves the modulation of oxidative stress-related mechanisms, providing antioxidant protection to cells. In preclinical studies using primary human fibroblasts from LHON patients, BVA-203 demonstrated statistically significant protective effects against oxidative insult, outperforming idebenone. It is currently in the advanced preclinical stage and is available for licensing.
