Overview

BVA-501 is a small molecule antibiotic being repositioned by Biovista for the treatment of oncology indications, specifically malignant gliomas (including glioblastoma), melanoma, and thyroid cancer. The drug's mechanism of action involves the disruption of mitochondrial protein synthesis and the mitochondrial respiratory chain, which inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells. Preclinical studies have shown that BVA-501 has favorable blood-brain barrier permeability, suggesting potential efficacy in treating tumors of the central nervous system. It is currently in the preclinical stage of development and is protected by provisional US patents for its repositioned applications.
