BVA-601 is a small molecule, repositioned drug candidate being developed by Biovista for the treatment of epilepsy. It functions as a histamine H1-receptor antagonist and also targets an additional, undisclosed receptor known to play a role in epileptic activity. The drug is designed to provide both anti-epileptic and neuroprotective effects by addressing mitochondrial dysfunction and protecting neuronal mitochondria against excessively high levels of cytoplasmic calcium. BVA-601 has demonstrated significant reduction in epileptic activity in preclinical rodent models of temporal lobe epilepsy, showing comparable efficacy to diazepam with a superior safety profile. It is blood-brain barrier permeable and has an established safety profile in humans from its previous clinical use.
