Overview

BVF-045 is an investigational, orally bioavailable small molecule being developed by BioVie for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It functions as a highly selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B), an enzyme responsible for the oxidative deamination of dopamine in the central nervous system. By selectively blocking MAO-B, BVF-045 aims to increase and sustain synaptic dopamine levels in the striatum, thereby alleviating the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease and potentially reducing 'off' time for patients. The drug candidate is designed to offer superior selectivity compared to first-generation MAO inhibitors, which may minimize the risk of hypertensive crises (the 'cheese effect') and other off-target side effects, providing a more favorable safety and efficacy profile for long-term management of neurodegenerative movement disorders.
