It functions as a highly selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B), an enzyme responsible for the oxidative deamination of dopamine in the central nervous system. By selectively blocking MAO-B, BVF-045 aims to increase and sustain synaptic dopamine levels in the striatum, thereby alleviating the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease and potentially reducing 'off' time for patients.
