Overview

BVF-239 is a proprietary, ready-to-use liquid formulation of caffeine citrate developed by BioVie (formerly NanoBiologics) for the treatment of apnea of prematurity (AOP). As a methylxanthine derivative, caffeine acts primarily as a competitive antagonist at adenosine A1 and A2A receptors. In neonates, this antagonism leads to the stimulation of the medullary respiratory center, increased minute ventilation, and an enhanced ventilatory response to hypercapnia. Additionally, caffeine improves diaphragmatic contractility and increases metabolic rate. BVF-239 was designed to offer a stable and convenient dosing option for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting, though BioVie has recently shifted its strategic focus toward other therapeutic areas, leaving the development of BVF-239 inactive.
