BVF-324 (also known as BIV-324) is a proprietary liquid formulation of caffeine developed by BioVie for the treatment of apnea of prematurity (AOP). Caffeine, a methylxanthine, primarily acts as a non-selective antagonist at adenosine A1 and A2A receptors. In preterm infants, the antagonism of these receptors in the central nervous system stimulates the medullary respiratory centers, increases minute ventilation, and enhances the sensitivity of the respiratory system to carbon dioxide. Additionally, caffeine improves diaphragmatic contractility and reduces the frequency of apneic episodes. BVF-324 is designed as a stable, ready-to-use solution intended to provide more precise dosing and improved safety compared to standard caffeine citrate preparations in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
