BXT-25 is an acellular oxygen carrier (AOC) developed by Bioxytran for the treatment of hypoxic conditions, particularly ischemic stroke and other diseases where blood flow is blocked or oxygen delivery to tissues is compromised. The drug acts as a universal oxygen carrier, designed to deliver oxygen directly to hypoxic tissues even when normal blood flow is impaired. Its small molecular size (less than 1/5000th that of a red blood cell) allows it to penetrate clots and reach areas with limited access, making it suitable for use as a resuscitative agent in cerebrovascular accidents such as stroke. Preclinical studies have shown that BXT-25 can reverse hypoxia without causing nitric oxide scavenging or animal toxicity. The drug was originally developed for cerebral contrast imaging but has since been repurposed for therapeutic applications in stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, chronic kidney disease (CKD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), wound healing, transfusion therapy (blood loss), anemia treatment, and potentially Long Covid. Bioxytran plans to advance BXT-25 into clinical trials following submission of an Investigational New Drug application[1][2][3][4][5][7][9].
