C-heparin

Development stage
Unknown
01

Overview

C-heparin is a cleaved, low-affinity form of heparin, a sulfated polysaccharide. It is prepared through the partial deaminative cleavage of commercial crude heparin. This modified heparin exhibits anticoagulant activity primarily by inhibiting factor Xa. Additionally, C-heparin has been shown to interact with cytochrome c, influencing its thermotropic properties and inhibiting electron transport from reduced cytochrome c to cytochrome c oxidase. It has been studied for its potential in surface modification, specifically for immobilization onto pyrolytic carbon-coated graphite used in mechanical heart valve prostheses, where it retains anticoagulant activity.
