Overview

C-SSM-VIP is a preclinical-stage, actively targeted nanomedicine formulation consisting of curcumin encapsulated within sterically stabilized phospholipid nanomicelles (SSM) that are surface-conjugated with vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). Developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago, this formulation is designed to target breast cancer stem cells (CSCs), which overexpress VIP receptors. By binding to these receptors, C-SSM-VIP undergoes receptor-mediated endocytosis, enhancing the intracellular delivery and bioavailability of curcumin. Curcumin then acts to inhibit key cancer stem cell survival and self-renewal pathways, offering a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent breast cancer recurrence and metastasis.
