C-Tb is a novel diagnostic agent used for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. It is a skin test that contains recombinant proteins ESAT-6 and CFP-10, which are specific antigens found in M. tuberculosis but not in most non-tuberculous mycobacteria or BCG vaccine strains. The mechanism of action involves eliciting a delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) immune response at the site of intradermal injection in individuals previously sensitized to M. tuberculosis antigens. This response is similar to the traditional tuberculin skin test (TST), but with higher specificity due to the use of defined antigens rather than purified protein derivative (PPD). The primary indication for C-Tb is as an aid in diagnosing latent or active tuberculosis infection.
