Overview

C. butyricum-pMTL007-GLP-1 is an engineered probiotic strain of Clostridium butyricum that has been genetically modified to express human glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP‑1) via the recombinant plasmid pMTL007 encoding the hGLP gene[1][5][9]. This live biotherapeutic product is designed to combine the beneficial effects of both GLP‑1 and microbial-derived butyrate for therapeutic purposes. The mechanism involves continuous in situ production of GLP‑1 in the gut, which acts as a GLP‑1 receptor agonist to improve metabolic parameters such as blood glucose regulation and lipid metabolism[2][7], while also modulating gut microbiota composition and producing short-chain fatty acids like butyrate that have additional cardiovascular and metabolic benefits[5]. Preclinical studies have demonstrated efficacy in models of hypertension (reducing blood pressure and cardiac hypertrophy), type 2 diabetes mellitus (lowering blood glucose, improving dyslipidemia, ameliorating hepatic impairment), obesity (improving metabolic phenotypes), and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (promoting mitophagy with neuroprotective effects)[3][6].
