Overview

*Campylobacter jejuni* strain CG8421 is a well-characterized, wild-type bacterial isolate used primarily as a challenge agent in Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIM). Originally isolated from a patient with clinical enteritis, CG8421 has been developed as a standardized inoculum to induce campylobacteriosis in healthy adult volunteers under controlled clinical settings. This model is utilized by institutions such as the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) to evaluate the protective efficacy of candidate vaccines and prophylactic interventions, including hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC) and whole-cell vaccines. CG8421 is known for its ability to reliably produce moderate-to-severe diarrheal symptoms and trigger measurable inflammatory immune responses in a dose-dependent manner, providing a consistent baseline for assessing the impact of new therapeutic or preventive strategies.
