C13 N15 valine is a stable isotope-labeled form of the essential amino acid valine, where carbon atoms are replaced with carbon-13 and the nitrogen atom with nitrogen-15. It is primarily used as a metabolic tracer in clinical research to study protein turnover and metabolic flux in vivo. In the CARBONOMIC study conducted by University Hospital, Grenoble, this compound is administered to patients with high-grade gliomas, such as glioblastoma, to label newly synthesized tumoral proteins. Subsequent analysis of tumor tissue using mass spectrometry allows researchers to identify metabolic biomarkers and understand the dynamics of tumor growth and protein metabolism, which may inform future diagnostic or therapeutic strategies. As a non-radioactive tracer, it allows for the safe tracking of metabolic pathways in human subjects.
