Overview

C60-serinol is a water-soluble C60 fullerene derivative designed as a potent antioxidant and radioprotective agent. The molecule features a C60 fullerene core functionalized with six malonate groups containing serinolamide moieties in an octahedral arrangement, which imparts high water solubility (>250 mg/ml) and low cytotoxicity compared to unmodified fullerenes. It functions as a "free radical sponge," effectively scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by ionizing radiation, thereby preventing oxidative damage to DNA, lipids, and proteins. Developed by researchers at UTHealth Houston and MD Anderson Cancer Center, C60-serinol is being investigated as a countermeasure for astronauts against cosmic radiation and as a therapeutic to alleviate radiation-induced cardiovascular disease and other endotheliopathies in cancer patients.
