Overview

Cabbage leaf extract is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the cabbage plant (*Brassica oleracea*). It is most notably investigated as a topical treatment, often formulated as a cream, for breast engorgement in lactating women to alleviate pain and tissue hardness. However, systematic reviews by the Cochrane Library indicate that while the extract is perceived as helpful by patients, clinical trials have shown its efficacy to be comparable to placebo and less effective than active breastfeeding. Beyond its medical use, cabbage leaf extract is utilized in environmental biotechnology as a nutrient supplement to stimulate the growth of soil bacteria for the biodegradation of nitroaromatic explosives such as TNT. In research settings, it is used as a source of enzymes like beta-glucosidase to study plant-herbivore defense responses and as a reagent for analyzing viral RNA fragments in plant virology.
