Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cabergoline is a long-acting dopamine receptor agonist and ergot derivative primarily used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin hormone). It works by stimulating dopamine D2 receptors in the pituitary gland, which inhibits the secretion of prolactin. This reduction in prolactin helps manage conditions such as prolactinomas (pituitary tumors producing excess prolactin), menstrual and fertility problems related to high prolactin levels, and Parkinson's disease as adjunctive therapy. Cabergoline has a longer duration of action compared to older drugs like bromocriptine and is favored for its efficacy and convenient dosing schedule. It may also be used off-label for lactation suppression, uterine fibroids, acromegaly adjunctive treatment (to suppress hyperprolactinemia), and other disorders associated with elevated prolactin. The drug is taken orally in tablet form.[1][2][3][6]
