Overview

Caesalpinia bonduc seed kernel extract is a botanical preparation derived from the seeds of the Caesalpinia bonduc plant, a prickly shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions. Traditionally utilized in Ayurvedic and other folk medicine systems, the extract is primarily investigated for its anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective, and anti-hyperlipidemic properties. Research in preclinical models, such as alloxan-induced diabetic rats, has demonstrated that the extract can significantly reduce serum glucose levels, improve lipid profiles, and protect against liver injury by normalizing liver function markers. These pharmacological effects are attributed to a complex mixture of phytochemicals, including furanoditerpenes (such as bonducin), flavonoids, and phytosterols, which are thought to act through antioxidant mechanisms and the inhibition of carbohydrate-metabolizing enzymes like alpha-glucosidase.
