Caffeine + methoxsalen is a combination of two small molecule drugs. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant of the methylxanthine class, commonly used to promote wakefulness and treat apnea of prematurity, among other indications. Methoxsalen (also known as 8-methoxypsoralen or 8-MOP) is a psoralen derivative used primarily as a photosensitizing agent in photochemotherapy for conditions such as severe psoriasis. When administered together, methoxsalen acts as a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2), the primary enzyme responsible for caffeine metabolism. This results in significantly reduced clearance and prolonged half-life of caffeine, leading to increased plasma concentrations and risk of side effects from caffeine[1][4][7]. The combination does not have an established therapeutic indication but may be relevant in pharmacokinetic studies or drug interaction research.
