Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Caffeine sodium benzoate is a small-molecule injectable drug composed of caffeine anhydrous and sodium benzoate, which acts as a solubilizing agent. It functions primarily as a non-selective antagonist at the adenosine A1 and A2a receptors, and it also inhibits D-amino-acid oxidase (DAAO). These actions result in significant central nervous system (CNS) and skeletal muscle stimulation. Historically, the drug has been used to treat respiratory depression associated with CNS depressant overdose. More recently, it has been investigated in Phase 1 clinical trials by Karolinska University Hospital for its analgesic properties in experimental ischemic pain models to determine whether its effects are mediated through central or peripheral mechanisms.
