Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cajanus cajan extract is a botanical extract derived from various parts (leaves, seeds, roots) of the pigeon pea plant (*Cajanus cajan*), a legume widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The extract contains multiple bioactive compounds including **stilbenes** (cajanol, cajaninstilbene acid, longistylin A and C), **flavonoids** (vitexin, orientin, pinostrobin, genistein, genistin), **coumarins** (cajanuslactone), **phenolic acids** (caffeic acid, ferulic acid), and various **proteins and amino acids**. These constituents contribute to diverse pharmacological activities including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anthelmintic, and metabolic regulatory effects. The extract has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine for treating various conditions including digestive disorders, skin inflammation, and metabolic imbalances. Modern research has demonstrated its ability to inhibit growth of various microorganisms including *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Candida albicans*, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, provide antioxidant protection through free radical scavenging, and potentially improve glucose tolerance and lipid profiles. The mechanism of action involves multiple pathways including inhibition of LDL oxidation, modulation of inflammatory gene expression, and antioxidant enzyme activity enhancement.
