Overview

Cal-1 modified CD4+ T lymphocytes is a cell and gene therapy developed by Calimmune, Inc. for the treatment of HIV infection. The therapy involves isolating a patient's own CD4+ T lymphocytes and hematopoietic progenitor/stem cells, genetically modifying them ex vivo to replace the CCR5 receptor with a natural variant that prevents HIV from binding, and then reintroducing these modified cells into the patient. The goal is for these resistant T cells to proliferate and outnumber HIV-infected cells, thereby blocking viral entry and progression of the disease. The therapy was in Phase I clinical trials to assess its safety.
