Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calci-Clear is an over-the-counter medication and dietary supplement containing calcium carbonate, primarily utilized as an antacid and a source of elemental calcium. As an antacid, it works by chemically neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid, thereby increasing the pH of the stomach and relieving symptoms of acid indigestion and heartburn. In the context of chronic kidney disease, calcium carbonate acts as a phosphate binder by reacting with dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract to form insoluble calcium phosphate complexes, which are subsequently excreted in the feces. This process helps to manage hyperphosphatemia by reducing systemic phosphate absorption. Additionally, it is used to prevent or treat calcium deficiencies in conditions such as osteoporosis and hypocalcemia.
