Overview

Calcined oyster shell is a material produced by the thermal decomposition (calcination) of waste oyster shells at high temperatures, typically between 500°C and 900°C. This process converts the naturally occurring calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) into reactive calcium oxide ($CaO$) or magnesian calcite. In a medicinal context, calcined oyster shell is used in traditional medicine and has been studied for its anti-ulcer properties, where it acts by neutralizing gastric acid and providing mucosal protection. Beyond its pharmaceutical potential, it is extensively utilized in environmental and industrial applications: it serves as a low-cost adsorbent and coagulant for removing heavy metals (arsenic, nickel, lead), nutrients (phosphates, nitrates, boron), and turbidity from water. It is also employed as a soil conditioner to remediate acidified soil, a natural food preservative for aquatic products due to its antibacterial and sporicidal properties, and a reactive filler in construction materials like mortar and pavement subgrades.
