Overview

Calcitonin + monofluorophosphate is a combination therapy consisting of two agents used in the management of bone disorders, particularly osteoporosis. Calcitonin is a hormone that inhibits bone resorption by acting as an agonist at the calcitonin receptor on osteoclasts, thereby reducing bone turnover and helping to maintain or increase bone mineral density. Monofluorophosphate (MFP) is a fluoride compound with anabolic effects on bone; it stimulates osteoblast activity and increases lumbar spine bone mineral density, with evidence suggesting it can reduce vertebral fracture incidence. Both agents are considered antiresorptive drugs but act through different mechanisms—calcitonin primarily inhibits osteoclast-mediated resorption while MFP promotes new bone formation via stimulation of osteoblasts. Combination therapy has been explored for additive or synergistic effects in increasing BMD in postmenopausal osteoporosis, though there is limited evidence that combining antiresorptive drugs further reduces fracture risk compared to monotherapy[3][5][7].
