Overview

Calcitonin porcine is a polypeptide hormone derived from the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland in pigs. It acts primarily by binding to specific receptors on osteoclasts, inhibiting their activity and thereby reducing bone resorption. This leads to decreased serum and urinary calcium concentrations and helps maintain or increase bone mass without adversely affecting cortical bone. Calcitonin porcine was historically used for conditions such as Paget's disease of bone and osteoporosis; it was the first commercially available preparation of calcitonin in Britain under the brand name Calcitare. In clinical studies, it improved symptoms associated with Paget's disease but showed limited efficacy in osteoporosis[1][2][3][5].
