Overview

Calcitonin salmon is a synthetic or recombinant form of the peptide hormone found in the thyroid gland of fish, particularly salmon. It is a 32-amino acid polypeptide that acts as an agonist at the human calcitonin receptor. Its primary mechanism is to inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, thereby reducing bone turnover and lowering serum calcium levels. This makes it effective for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis, Paget’s disease of bone (especially in patients unresponsive or intolerant to other therapies), and hypercalcemia. Calcitonin salmon can be administered via nasal spray or injection and has greater potency and longer duration than mammalian forms of the hormone[1][2][3][4][5][9].
