Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium (13C)carbonate is a stable isotope-labeled diagnostic agent developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical for the quantitative assessment of gastric acid secretion. Administered orally as part of the C13-CAC breath test, the compound reacts with hydrochloric acid (gastric acid) in the stomach to generate carbon-13-labeled carbon dioxide (13CO2). The labeled gas is absorbed into the bloodstream, exhaled through the lungs, and measured in breath samples using an infrared spectral analyzer. This non-invasive diagnostic tool is used to estimate gastric acidity and evaluate gastric acid-related disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcers, as well as to monitor the pharmacodynamic effects of acid-suppressing therapies like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs).
