Calcium-41 chloride is an investigational radiopharmaceutical diagnostic tracer developed by the University of California, Davis, for the high-sensitivity measurement of bone calcium kinetics. Utilizing the long-lived isotope calcium-41 (half-life of approximately 100,000 years), the tracer is administered orally and behaves biologically like stable calcium, incorporating into the bone hydroxyapatite matrix. Its subsequent release into blood and urine, measured via accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), provides a highly sensitive readout of bone resorption and turnover rates. In clinical research, this technology is applied to monitor bone mineral balance in patients with prostate cancer-induced bone metastases, serving as a potential biomarker for disease progression and the efficacy of bone-targeted therapies.
