Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phoslyra is an FDA-approved oral solution of calcium acetate, a small molecule phosphate binder. It is indicated for the reduction of serum phosphorus in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. By binding to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, it forms insoluble calcium phosphate complexes that are excreted in the feces, thereby reducing phosphate absorption. This liquid formulation is particularly useful for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules. It is often used as an active comparator in clinical trials for newer phosphate binders like sucroferric oxyhydroxide.
