Overview
Calcium acetylsalicylate (also known as aspirin calcium or calcium acetylsalicylic acid) is the calcium salt form of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic (pain-relieving), antipyretic (fever-reducing), anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant activities. Upon administration, it acts by binding to and irreversibly acetylating serine residues in cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2). This inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxane A2 from arachidonic acid. The result is reduced pain, inflammation, fever and platelet aggregation. Calcium salts of aspirin are sometimes used to improve gastrointestinal tolerability compared to standard sodium or free-acid forms[1][2][6].
