Overview
**Calcium alpha-ketoglutarate** is a calcium salt form of alpha-ketoglutarate, a key intermediate in the citric acid (Krebs) cycle. As a dietary supplement, it is used to restore blood calcium levels, support energy metabolism, stimulate wound healing, aid collagen synthesis, regulate glucose and lipid levels, and assist in detoxification[3][5][7]. In clinical studies, Ca-AKG has shown benefits in metabolism, anti-inflammatory response (notably via NF-kB inhibition), improved nitrogen metabolism, and reduced metabolic stress. Ca-AKG is under investigation for its potential to slow biological aging (reduce DNA methylation age) and improve healthspan and lifespan, with evidence from animal models and emerging clinical trials[5][6][7]. In hemodialysis patients, supplementation has supported renal function and reduced uremia[3][6]. Mechanistically, alpha-ketoglutarate acts as a nitrogen scavenger, a precursor to glutamate and glutamine, and a modulator of cellular energy production and methylation[3][4].
